CA Department Loses Last Volunteer FF

March 15, 2022
The loss of the last Shasta Fire Station 56 firefighter leaves the community's closest fire protection over three miles away, and that worries residents.

With the departure of the last volunteer firefighter from the Shasta Fire District, the community's only fire station is no longer active.

"We are in limbo right now, and we don't have anyone at this station even actively, and not even one person and three miles down the road is the closest responders, and they aren't actively staffed all the time, and I feel vulnerable," nearby resident Tim Shansey told Action News Now.

The last member of the department, Aida Kowalski, said she is worried what could happen without the local fire station.

"We do have a Cal fire station, and if they're busy, there is a chance there will be nobody there, and there is a chance that an engine could be coming from a lot further away," she told the television station.

Shansey said the Shasta Community Services District is not trying to find new volunteer firefighters.

"They reject and refuse to staff, and refuse to take volunteers in because of, a ridiculous legal thing that is going on, and they don't want to answer any questions," said Shansey.

District general manager Chris Koeper said he is waiting on further direction before taking on new volunteers.
